SUMMARY:Wednesday 20th November 2024 - John Pittwood - Wightwick Manor and its contents
DESCRIPTION:Chaddesley Corbett Local History Society \n  \nWednesday November 20th  – 7.30pm   \nJohn Pittwood \nWightwick Manor and its contents \n  \nOne of Wolverhampton’s Trinity of historic houses. Frequently posted on social media for its stunning interiors. Wightwick Manor was created by the Mander family. It is a house of beautiful possessions and art collected along very specific lines in the definite knowledge that it would be donated to the nation via the National Trust. \nThe possessions and their story reflect the Mander families vocal support of women’s suffrage; they held Suffragist meetings here; fought in parliament for women’s rights\, including female servants; and collected the work of 11 professional female artists. They were influenced by and supported the work of the romantic rulebreakers of the time who were often working for gender equality and fighting prejudice through their artistic endeavours. \nThe home the Manders created at Wightwick followed the principles of the Aesthetic Movement and was filled with art and objects associated with William Morris\, the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood and the Arts and Crafts movement. They had a passion for this art and for telling the stories of the artists. Some of the work of Christina Rosetti\, May Morris\, Evelyn De Morgan\, Simeon Solomon and Oscar Wilde is to be found here and their stories link with the house and its owners. \n  \nMembers unable to attend the meeting in person can watch\, at a later date\, via YouTube if you request a link. Please request a link via email below. \nTalks held in Chaddesley Corbett Village Hall \nDY10 4QA \nEnquiries to Freda Griffith 07747618487 fred@fredagriffith.co.uk \nVisitors are always welcome@£5 paid on the door. \nFIND US ON FACEBOOK Chaddesley Corbett Local History Society \nFor further updates and to post interesting history notes or enquiries \n  \nThe next meeting will be in the new season\, February 19th – Great Wall of Kidderminster\, the speaker is Michael Loftus
