SUMMARY:Chaddesley Corbett Local History Society Wednesday February 18th 7.30pm
DESCRIPTION:Chaddesley Corbett Local History Society \n  \nWednesday February 18th 7.30pm \nHeather Flack \nCrossing the Severn – the bridges\, fords and ferries over the River Severn in Worcestershire \nTelford’s Bridge Bewdley. \nThe River Severn is famous for its limited number of crossings. But was this always the case? There are many lost fords and ferries\, and a few lost bridges too; which used to keep communities together and foster commercial and social interaction. This talk will inspire you to explore afresh the local footpaths which trace our local river and you too will notice these old crossings and some of the features that identify where they are to be found. Heather has lived in\, explored and researched the area for many years and has created this talk from her own experiences. \n  \nEveryone is welcome\, including visitors @£5 paid on the door \n  \nTalks held in Chaddesley Corbett Village Hall \nDY10 4QA \nEnquiries to Freda Griffith 07747618487 fred@fredagriffith.co.uk \n  \n  \nThe next meeting will be: March 18th Richard Churchley with his talk “Off to the workhouse”: the poor are always with us \nChaddesley Corbett Local History Society \n  \n1 Crossing Severn Flack \n

SUMMARY:Gheluvelt - Chaddesley Corbett Local History Society
DESCRIPTION:Chaddesley Corbett Local History Society \n  \nWednesday September 17 th  – 7.30pm   \nGheluvelt \n  \nFor a fascinating talk about our local city and regiment please join us to find out about the first crisis of the First Battle of Ypres which centered on the village of Gheluvelt\, on 31st October 1914. Gheluvelt village in Belgium seemed to have been lost\, making a gap in the British line\, through this a German breakthrough to Ypres (and beyond) was likely. \nHear the story of a successful counter-attack of 2nd Battalion Worcestershire Regiment against the German army at Gheluvelt. \nThe Gheluvelt park in Worcester is the war memorial to this battle and earlier this year a Gheluvelt to Gheluvelt cycle ride took place over 320 miles and 4 days to commemorate the contribution of the city’s regiment. \n  \nTalks held in Chaddesley Corbett Village Hall \nDY10 4QA \nEnquiries to Freda Griffith 07747618487 fred@fredagriffith.co.uk \n  \nVisitors are always welcome@£5 paid on the door. \n  \nThe next meeting will be: October 15th Bob Booth on Life in Bourneville

SUMMARY:(AGM) Bessie Blount of Kinlet\, Robert Hodge
DESCRIPTION:haddesley Corbett Local History Society \n  \nWednesday March 19th  – 7.30pm   \nRobert Hodge \nBessie Blount of Kinlet \n  \n  \nAre you interested in family history? \nWell research for Elizabeth Blount has been carried out by our highly respect speaker ready for you to enjoy with the History Society.  Blount was the mother of Henry VIII’s only acknowledged illegitimate child\, and a male one at that. Imagine if her son had been named successor or indeed if Henry VIII had married this little-known mistress from Kinlet; the small village on the northern edge of the Wyre Forest\, just within Shropshire. Her connection to Catherine of Aragon brought her into the Kings circle and her fortuitous marriages following the birth of her child made her a relatively rich woman. \nNeed to know more… \nCome and find out what Dr Robert Hodge is prepared to reveal at the History Society talk this March. \n  \nIncluding our brief AGM \n  \nMembers unable to attend the meeting in person can watch\, at a later date\, via YouTube if you request a link. SUMMARY:Chaddesley Corbett Local History Society - Wednesday February 19th  - 7.30pm  - Michael Loftus
DESCRIPTION:Chaddesley Corbett Local History Society \n  \nWednesday February 19th  – 7.30pm   \nMichael Loftus \nThe Great Wall of Kidderminster \n  \n  \nMichael Loftus has a most engaging speaking style and gigantic knowledge of the subject of the immense retaining wall on our local ring road\, the fascinating history of this Grade II listed feature of Kidderminster and the way it connects us with Coventry\, Wrexham and Harrods Store. The wall is something we drive past on a regular basis\, some love it\, others loath it\, but once you know the story of the artist who had the inspration and the councillors seemed to see the sense of investing in quality you will understand this amazing legacy. \n  \n  \nMembers unable to attend the meeting in person can watch\, at a later date\, via YouTube if you request a link. SUMMARY:Wednesday 20th November 2024 - John Pittwood - Wightwick Manor and its contents
DESCRIPTION:Chaddesley Corbett Local History Society \n  \nWednesday November 20th  – 7.30pm   \nJohn Pittwood \nWightwick Manor and its contents \n  \nOne of Wolverhampton’s Trinity of historic houses. Frequently posted on social media for its stunning interiors. Wightwick Manor was created by the Mander family. It is a house of beautiful possessions and art collected along very specific lines in the definite knowledge that it would be donated to the nation via the National Trust. \nThe possessions and their story reflect the Mander families vocal support of women’s suffrage; they held Suffragist meetings here; fought in parliament for women’s rights\, including female servants; and collected the work of 11 professional female artists. They were influenced by and supported the work of the romantic rulebreakers of the time who were often working for gender equality and fighting prejudice through their artistic endeavours. \nThe home the Manders created at Wightwick followed the principles of the Aesthetic Movement and was filled with art and objects associated with William Morris\, the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood and the Arts and Crafts movement. They had a passion for this art and for telling the stories of the artists. Some of the work of Christina Rosetti\, May Morris\, Evelyn De Morgan\, Simeon Solomon and Oscar Wilde is to be found here and their stories link with the house and its owners. \n  \nMembers unable to attend the meeting in person can watch\, at a later date\, via YouTube if you request a link. SUMMARY:Wednesday October 16th - 7.30pm
DESCRIPTION:Chaddesley Corbett Local History Society \n  \nWednesday October 16th – 7.30pm   \nAnthony Poulton-Smith \nThe Salt Routes \n  \nThe Talk: \nAs mankind gave up the nomadic hunter gatherer life and became farmers\, they were largely self-sufficient. However\, one vital commodity was available only in a few isolated areas – salt. Early settlements needed salt to preserve meat and as a vital part of the diet of every animal. Thus\, trade routes were born\, a network of tracks filtering across the land to the southeast from the two major centres of salt production in Droitwich\, Worcestershire and Cheshire. We shall investigate the history of the places and look at how salt has influenced these areas and a look at how salt played a significant role in the development of the English language. \nThe Speaker: Anthony Poulton-Smith \nA freelance journalist and author\, with 92 published books\, over 230 more as a ghostwriter\, and 1\,700 articles\, plus innumerable quizzes\, puzzles\, crosswords\, et al. This has led to invitations to talk on television\, radio\, and in person over 700 times. An interest in history\, and in particular in etymology and in the development of language\, he is a trustee and committee member on seven committees in his hometown of Tamworth. \n  \nMembers unable to attend the meeting in person can watch\, at a later date\, via YouTube if you request a link. SUMMARY:Wednesday 21st February 2024 - John Price The Monarch’s Way - The escape of Charles II after the battle of Worcester
DESCRIPTION:1 Monarchs Way February 2024Wednesday 21st February 2024 – John Price The Monarch’s Way – The escape of Charles II after the battle of Worcester \n  \nChaddesley Corbett Local History Society \n  \nWednesday February 21st   7.30pm   \n  \nJohn Price \nwill speak on \nThe Monarch’s Way – \nThe escape of Charles II after the Battle of Worcester \nPowick Bridge\, Where the Monarch’s Way begins. \nThe 625 miles of the Monarch’s Way links various towns\, villages\, country houses and inns associated with the then future King Charles II’s escape from Worcester in 1651. The route uses rights-of-way (sometimes sharing other national routes like The Cotswold Way) This long-distance path is the longest way-marked inland walk in the UK and it passes through Chaddesley Corbett as it goes north and then it’s southern section is though Dodford. \nJohn Price has extensive knowledge about the passage of the prince\, soon to be King Charles II and this historic path. He is mentioned in The Daily Telegraph “In the footsteps of a king: walking the Monarch’s Way”. \nYou will recognise so many local places in this talk and learn something new at each turn. \nIt is planned that a History Society Summer Walk 2024 will in part follow the section of the Monarch’s Way that crosses our parish. You too can follow the footsteps of a king who regained his throne. \n  \n  \n  \nTalks held in Chaddesley Corbett Village Hall \nDY10 4QA \nEnquiries to Freda Griffith 07747618487 \nEmail – fred@fredagriffith.co.uk \nVisitors are always welcome@£5 paid on the door. \nFIND US ON FACEBOOK Chaddesley Corbett Local History Society \nFor further updates and to post interesting history notes or enquiries \n  \nThe next meeting will be March 20th Tim Bridges \nVictorian and Edwardian Buildings of the Midlands \n
