SUMMARY:Wednesday October 16th - 7.30pm
DESCRIPTION:Chaddesley Corbett Local History Society \n  \nWednesday October 16th – 7.30pm   \nAnthony Poulton-Smith \nThe Salt Routes \n  \nThe Talk: \nAs mankind gave up the nomadic hunter gatherer life and became farmers\, they were largely self-sufficient. However\, one vital commodity was available only in a few isolated areas – salt. Early settlements needed salt to preserve meat and as a vital part of the diet of every animal. Thus\, trade routes were born\, a network of tracks filtering across the land to the southeast from the two major centres of salt production in Droitwich\, Worcestershire and Cheshire. We shall investigate the history of the places and look at how salt has influenced these areas and a look at how salt played a significant role in the development of the English language. \nThe Speaker: Anthony Poulton-Smith \nA freelance journalist and author\, with 92 published books\, over 230 more as a ghostwriter\, and 1\,700 articles\, plus innumerable quizzes\, puzzles\, crosswords\, et al. This has led to invitations to talk on television\, radio\, and in person over 700 times. An interest in history\, and in particular in etymology and in the development of language\, he is a trustee and committee member on seven committees in his hometown of Tamworth. \n  \nMembers unable to attend the meeting in person can watch\, at a later date\, via YouTube if you request a link.
